When To Replace Your Toothbrush And Other Oral Health Tips
We often mention the importance of receiving routine dental care in our office. However, today, we want to share the importance of caring for your teeth in your own home. We see our patients so infrequently during the year, which leaves the majority of their dental care in their own hands. Caring for your teeth properly helps prevent decay and other problems with your oral health. Here are some helpful tips to help ensure optimal oral health:
Replace Your Toothbrush
Your toothbrush should be replaced every 2–3 months if there are no other problems. If the bristles on your toothbrush are distressed, appear to be breaking down, and are not standing up straight, it is time for a new brush. Toothbrushes also need to be changed after an illness, especially a cold, the flu, COVID, or strep throat.
Floss Daily
Are you flossing daily? We know our patients are brushing their teeth, but when they come in for an oral hygiene examination, we can tell who is flossing and who isn’t. Flossing daily is just as important as brushing your teeth. Dental floss helps remove food and bacteria from between the teeth. If not removed, it can lead to tooth decay as well as gum disease. If you are unsure how to floss properly, we would be more than happy to give a demonstration the next time you are in the office.
Limit Sugary Drinks
Do you love visiting your local coffee shop and creating a sugary coffee drink to enjoy? If so, you may be causing serious damage to your oral health. The amount of sugar in the coffee syrup may alarm you. The same is true for many soft drinks and sports beverages. Even if you choose a sugar-free option, such as zero-sugar cola or seltzer, the carbonation can damage tooth enamel.
If you have any other questions about your oral health or you are due for a routine hygiene examination, contact our office, which is located in Silverdale, WA, to schedule an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
