Sedation Dentistry Can Help Your Dental Nerves And Anxiety
Are you due for an oral hygiene examination or need to schedule a recommended treatment, but you have been delaying due to nerves or anxiety? If you feel nervous or have anxiety about visiting the dentist or receiving treatment, you are not alone. At Pollard Dental, we see patients every day who express that they are feeling nervous. Your feelings become a problem when they keep you from receiving dental treatment.
Delaying dental care can lead to serious problems and complications with your oral health now and in the future. Routine dental care is necessary to not only clean your teeth but also to ensure there are no problems with your teeth and gums. Problems in your mouth that are left untreated will continue to progress until treatment is received. This means more time in our office to treat these problems. To help patients who have extreme nervousness or fears that are keeping them from receiving dental treatment, we offer sedation dentistry.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses different medications to put patients in a relaxed state where they feel comfortable receiving dental treatment. Sedation is ideal for patients who have been avoiding dental care due to fears and nervousness over visiting the dentist. It can also be helpful for patients who are having long, in-depth treatments to help them stay relaxed for an extended period of time.
We offer two forms of sedation dentistry. Laughing gas, formally known as nitrous oxide, is inhaled during the treatment and immediately puts you in a relaxed state. The effects are only felt while breathing the laughing gas. Patients who use this sedation option are able to drive themselves to and from their appointments. The other sedation option is oral sedation. This requires medication to be taken about an hour before your appointment. The effects of sedation last much longer, and patients need to be driven to and from the office.
